Ouarzazate looks remote on a map: south of the High Atlas, on the edge of the Sahara. It is easier to reach than it looks. You can land at its own airport, a few minutes from the center, or come by road from Marrakech in about four hours over one of the most spectacular passes in Africa. From Agadir and Casablanca the drive is longer, but simple.
Here is every option, with the times, the trade-offs and what I would choose in each case.
The short answer
| From | Fastest option | By car | By bus | My pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | Direct flight to Ouarzazate (Paris-Orly, Marseille, Barcelona) | Not practical | No | Fly direct if your city has a route; else fly to Marrakech |
| Marrakech | Car or private transfer, about 4 h (about 200 km) | About 4 h on the N9 | CTM and Supratours, around 4 to 5 h | Private transfer with a stop at Telouet or Aït Ben Haddou |
| Agadir | Car or private transfer, 5 to 6 h (about 340 km) | 5 to 6 h on the N10 | Long-distance buses, much slower | Drive, with a stop in Taroudant or Taliouine |
| Casablanca | Royal Air Maroc flight, under 2 h | About 6 to 7 h (about 440 km) | CTM, about 6.5 to 8 h | Fly, or break the drive in Marrakech |
Flying direct to Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ)
Ouarzazate Airport (IATA code OZZ) lies about 2 to 3 km from the town center, a short taxi ride. Its single runway is 3,100 m long, and the terminal is small, so arrival formalities are usually quick. As of summer 2026, three airlines fly there.
| Airline | From | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Air Maroc | Casablanca | Connects with the RAM network in Morocco and abroad |
| Transavia | Paris-Orly | Three flights a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday) in summer 2026; the airline aims to keep them in winter |
| Ryanair | Barcelona, Marseille | Direct routes; check the season before you plan |
If there is no direct flight from your city, the usual plan is to fly to Marrakech, which has many more routes, and continue by road. It is the more beautiful way in any case, and the drive becomes part of the trip.
Local tip
Taxis wait outside arrivals. Fares from the airport vary, so agree on the price with the driver before you get in, or ask your hotel to send a car.
From Marrakech: over the Tizi n’Tichka
The road from Marrakech to Ouarzazate is the N9, about 200 km. It climbs out of the Haouz plain, crosses the High Atlas at the Tizi n’Tichka, at 2,260 m the highest major road pass in North Africa, and drops down to the south. Count about four hours of driving, more with stops.

The road is paved and in good condition, but it is a mountain road: hairpins, trucks, slow sections, and in winter, snow that can close the pass for a time. Drive in daylight, and if you get car sick, sit in the front and take something before you leave.
Two detours worth the time
- Telouet. Just after the pass, a side road leads to Telouet Kasbah, the stronghold of the Glaoui family, with some of the most richly decorated rooms in Morocco. From Telouet you can continue down the Ounila valley, the old caravan route, to Aït Ben Haddou. The road is narrow in places, so ask locally about its condition.
- Aït Ben Haddou. About 30 minutes before Ouarzazate, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou is a short turn off the main road. Many travelers sleep there and reach Ouarzazate the next morning.
Bus
CTM and Supratours, the two main national coach companies, run buses between Marrakech and Ouarzazate several times a day, for a journey of around four to five hours. Book a day ahead in high season, and bring water and a layer: the pass is cold even when Marrakech is warm.
From Agadir: the N10 through the Anti-Atlas
From Agadir, the N10 runs east for about 340 km through Taroudant, Taliouine and Taznakht to Ouarzazate. Count five to six hours of driving. The road is less dramatic than the Tichka but full of reasons to stop.
- Taroudant, about an hour and a half from Agadir, has earthen ramparts and a busy souk.
- Taliouine is the saffron capital of Morocco. Saffron cooperatives sell directly, and the town holds a saffron festival in late October or early November, at harvest time.
- Taznakht, at the foot of Jbel Siroua, is the carpet town of the Aït Ouaouzguit, where women weave by hand from local wool and plant dyes.
Buses cover the route too, but they take far longer than a car. If you arrive at Agadir Airport and want to reach Ouarzazate the same day, a car or a private transfer is the realistic option.
From Casablanca: fly or break the drive
Casablanca is about 440 km from Ouarzazate by road: the motorway south to Marrakech, then the N9 over the Tichka. That is six to seven hours of driving, the last part in the mountains. CTM runs buses on the route, taking roughly six and a half to eight hours.
I would not do it in one go after a long-haul flight. Either take the Royal Air Maroc flight from Casablanca, which takes under two hours, or drive to Marrakech on day one and cross the mountains fresh on day two.
Private transfers: how to book one well
A private transfer means a driver and a vehicle for you alone, door to door. From Marrakech, Agadir or Casablanca airport, it is the easiest way to reach Ouarzazate with luggage, children or a late arrival. Prices change with the season, the vehicle and the number of stops, so we do not quote them. What matters is what you agree before you pay.
| Ask about | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The total price, in writing | Tolls, fuel and the driver’s meal should be included, not added on arrival |
| Stops included | Telouet, Aït Ben Haddou or Taroudant can be part of the day if you ask in advance |
| The vehicle | Air conditioning and seat belts in every seat; child seats if you need them |
| A licensed tourist transport operator | Licensed vehicles are insured to carry passengers |
| Flight tracking | A good company follows your flight and waits if it is late |
| The pickup point | Airports are small, but agree where the driver will stand with your name |
Local tip
Book through your riad or hotel in Ouarzazate. They work with local drivers every day, and a driver based in Ouarzazate knows the Tichka and the side roads better than one sent from a call center.
Renting a car
You can rent a car at the main airports and in the towns, Ouarzazate included. A car gives you freedom for the valleys around Ouarzazate, but think twice about driving the Tichka yourself if you are not used to mountain roads. Fill the tank when you can on long stretches, avoid driving after dark, and expect police checkpoints: slow down and carry your papers.
For tracks such as the one to Fint oasis, or the desert crossing to Erg Chigaga, a standard car is not enough. Hire a 4×4 with a local driver for those days.

Which option should you choose?
- Short trip from Europe, with a direct route from your city: fly direct to Ouarzazate and spend your days in the valleys, not on the road.
- First trip to Morocco: fly to Marrakech, spend a few days there, then take a private transfer over the Tichka with stops at Telouet and Aït Ben Haddou.
- Coming from the coast: drive from Agadir and make a day of it through Taroudant, Taliouine and Taznakht.
- Business or tight schedule from Casablanca: take the flight.
- Budget travel: the CTM or Supratours bus from Marrakech.
